Kalgold open pit
Kalgold is an open-pit mine near Mafikeng, accessing gold-bearing ore in a banded ironstone formation in the Kraaipan Greenstone Belt. Tonnage mined at Kalgold is treated at a carbon-in-leach plant on site. Kalgold received ISO 14001 certification during the year.
For the fourth consecutive year, there were no fatal accidents at Kalgold, while the LTIFR increased to 3.87 per million hours worked from 1.27 in FY12. This is a remarkable milestone as Kalgold mine has been in operation and fatal-free since 1996. Kalgold reached 1.5 million fatality-free shifts during the year.
