Economic sustainability

Harmony is a significant role player in global gold markets, in the South African economy and in the economies of the provinces in which it operates. Harmony is one of the world’s leading producers of gold, and South Africa’s third-largest gold producer. Regionally, Harmony has an even bigger impact, for example in South Africa’s Free State where mining accounts for over 90% of provincial GDP.

  • Bambanani mine currently one of Harmony's most profitable mines with an all-in sustaining cost of less than US$700/oz for FY16
  • Bambanani mine has the highest underground recovered grade in South Africa of 12.99g/t
  • Optimisation study to integrate infrastructure between Phakisa and Tshepong underway with view to improving financial metrics of mining combined operation.
  • Productivity for our South African operations improved by 5% for in-service employees and contractors
  • Productivity for our South African operations improved to 45.6 tonnes per individual in FY16 (FY15: 43.6)
  • Underground grade increased to 5.02g/t for the year
