News flash - Harmony Sports Academy update

The achievements of the Harmony Sports Academy in Virginia seems to escalate even beyond the targets set for 2005.

Soccer

The previous news-flash in August 2005, referred to the U/16 as well as U/18 soccer teams winning their respective regional and provincial tournaments, thereby qualifying for the national tournaments for 2005.

The MTN National U/16 soccer tournament in Cape Town has just been concluded, with the Harmony Sports Academy being crowned the overall winners, beating the best U/16 sides in the country. Apart from winning the MTN Trophy as well as prize money of R75 000, four boys have also been selected for the USASSA U/16 National team. As could have been expected, this team will be coached by the Harmony Sports Academy coach Molefi Ntseke.

The U/18 Harmony Sports Academy Soccer team will represent the Free State at the Kay Motsepe National Tournament in Rustenburg from 29 September to 2 October 2005, and will also be strong contenders for this National title. South Africa’s future sporting heroes could be in the making at the Harmony’s Sports Academy in the Free State,’said Ferdi Dippenaar, Harmony’s Director of Corporate Affairs.

Rugby

After winning the Northern Free State (Griffons) U/18 schools league, the rugby guys are still actively involved on the provincial scene. Nine Harmony Sports Academy players have been included in the Griffons U/19 team. This competition is normally dominated by provinces with a strong university and tertiary institution base. The fact that the young Griffons are currently holding fourth position in this SARU National Competition, is no small achievement. The griffons team is being coached by Jan Oberholzer of the Harmony Academy.

”These talented young athletes and their dedicated coaches have achieved a remarkable level of success, considering the fact that all attempts to involve SARFU (South African Rugby Football Union) in the support of the academy have proved fruitless.

Transformation in rugby it seems, happens despite their involvement”, concluded Ferdi Dippenaar.
