Fatality at Harmony's Unisel shaft

Johannesburg. Wednesday, 22 July 2009. Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited (Harmony) regretfully announces that a fall of ground accident at its Unisel shaft, which is part of the Virginia Operations in the Free State, yesterday resulted in the death of a miner.

Management together with the Department of Mineral Resources commenced investigations today.

Harmony’s Chief Executive Officer, Graham Briggs says, “This is truly a tragic incident and we express our sincerest condolences to the bereaved family. Safety continues to receive priority attention from all stakeholders involved and we have already seen improvements in our safety record as a result of the effective behaviour-based safety initiatives that we have rolled out at all our operations. Despite these efforts, it remains unfortunate that this fatality still occurred.”
