Successful rescue mission at Harmony’s Kusasalethu mine

Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited (Harmony) is pleased to announce that a mineworker was successfully rescued following an 18-hour rescue mission, after a rockfall incident at its Kusasalethu mine near Carletonville. The rockfall incident on 105 Level was caused by a seismic event measuring 1.4 in magnitude yesterday morning at 03h22. The Kusasalethu proto team and mine employees responded very quickly and managed to open the mineworker’s upper body, however his legs remained trapped.

The rescue teams and the mine volunteers performed an excellent rescue effort in very difficult and challenging ground conditions. The mineworker, Mr Thabo Manyato was finally rescued last night and transported to hospital; he is in a stable condition.

Chief Executive Officer, Graham Briggs, commented: “We would like to thank members of the rescue teams, the unions and all Harmony employees who assisted in the rescue mission.”
