Mponeng is the deepest mine in the world. Mining infrastructure includes a main shaft supported by a sub-shaft. The mine primarily exploits the Ventersdorp Contact Reef, with production here having begun in 1986. Ore mined is processed at the Mponeng gold plant. Development is currently underway on a life extension project that was approved in February 2024.

Water stewardship
Harmony plants trees to support pollution plume migration, with geohydrologists confirming that mass planting improves groundwater quality. To date, we have planted over 6 000 trees at Mponeng.
